Wearable cameras and memory loss: what the research actually shows

A camera that watches your day and helps you remember it sounds like science fiction, or like surveillance. It's neither — it's a small, active area of research, with real studies, real participants, and results that are genuinely promising in places and genuinely limited in others. This guide walks through what two peer-reviewed studies actually found, not what a product page might imply they found.
What "passive capture" means
Most memory aids ask you to do something: write it down, set a reminder, take a photo on purpose. Passive capture flips that. A small wearable camera and microphone run continuously, quietly logging what happens around you, so the record exists whether or not you remembered to make it. The idea isn't new — lifelogging cameras have existed since the mid-2000s — but pairing that capture with a modern AI model that can answer plain-language questions about what it recorded is recent, and it's what the more current of the two studies below actually tests.
Study one: MemPal (2025)
Researchers at the MIT Media Lab gave fifteen older adults a wearable camera paired with a multimodal AI model, and had them use it in their own homes. The system kept a running text diary of what happened around the wearer and could answer spoken questions like “where did I leave my glasses?” Participants located objects more successfully with the assistant than without it, and rated the experience positively.
It's a small study, and it measured object retrieval specifically — not memory more broadly, and not any clinical outcome. What it demonstrates is narrower and more useful than a headline claim: this specific task, asking an AI assistant where you last saw something, based on what it actually observed, works better than not having it.
Study two: SenseCam (2017)
The older and larger study randomised fifty-one people with mild Alzheimer’s disease across three groups. One group reviewed images captured passively throughout the day by a wearable camera; a comparison group kept a written diary instead. Reviewing the camera images reduced depressive symptoms and improved everyday functional capacity compared with the written diary.
The honest part, which is easy to leave out and shouldn't be: quality-of-life scores did not shift in either group, and the gains that did appear had faded by the six-month follow-up. This is a real, peer-reviewed result showing a real, time-limited benefit — not evidence that a camera slows or treats the underlying condition.
What this does and doesn't mean
Read together, these two studies point at something specific: reviewing a passively-captured record of your day — on your own, or with an AI assistant that can answer questions about it — can help with concrete, everyday problems like finding objects and can measurably improve mood and function over the period studied. Neither study shows that the benefit is permanent, and neither is a clinical trial of a treatment. They're studies of a memory aid, in the same category as a written diary, a labelled calendar, or a note on the fridge — just one that doesn't depend on remembering to use it.
That distinction matters most for who this kind of technology is likely to help: someone in the earlier-to-mid stages of memory loss who is starting to lose track of everyday things — where they put their keys, whether they took their medication, what happened that afternoon — rather than someone who needs full clinical or custodial care.
